Few pieces of British furniture are as instantly recognisable as the Ercol rocking chair. This beautiful Model 470, dating from the 1960s, arrived at our workshop in need of careful restoration. Our aim was not to alter its character, but to preserve its originality while bringing back the warmth, elegance and craftsmanship that have made Ercol furniture so highly regarded for generations.
Careful restoration from start to finish
Every restoration begins with a thorough inspection, and this chair was no exception. We carefully assessed the condition of the frame, joints and timber before starting work. The chair was then professionally refinished by hand, removing years of wear and tired finishes while preserving the beautiful contours and fine details that make this design so distinctive. Once prepared, the timber was polished to enhance the natural beauty of the wood, allowing the rich grain of the elm seat and the pale beech frame to shine once again.
Bringing the natural timber back to life
One of the highlights of this rocking chair is its wonderfully figured solid elm seat. As the old finish was removed, the striking grain patterns hidden beneath years of use were revealed, creating a depth and warmth that only natural timber can provide. The steam-bent beech back, elegantly turned legs and delicate spindle construction were all carefully restored, ensuring the chair remains both sturdy and comfortable while retaining the graceful appearance intended by its original makers.
We were particularly pleased to retain the original gold Ercol label, an important feature that confirms the chair’s authenticity and heritage. The original cushions were also preserved, allowing this classic piece to maintain much of its original character while looking refreshed and ready for many more decades of use.
