1960 Ercol Windsor drop leaf table restored – £350

Condition on arrival

This 1960 Ercol Windsor drop leaf table (Model 384) had been forgotten in an outbuilding for decades. Over time, it was used as a garage worktop and even a gardening bench. As a result, it was in an extremely poor state when it reached our workshop.

The top was saturated with water and engine oil, leaving it badly warped and cupped. The framework had worked itself loose, and several joints no longer held firm. Deep stains and heavy discolouration masked the original beauty of the wood. Dust and grime had built up over the years, giving the impression that the table was beyond saving.

Our restoration process

  • First, we dismantled the entire table to access every part.
  • Then, we cleaned the top with acetone to lift the deep oil stains.
  • After that, we rehydrated the timber and clamped it several times, gradually straightening the warped and cupped top without damaging the wood.
  • Next, we repaired the loose framework and tightened all joints to restore strength.
  • Finally, we prepared every surface and applied a fresh light finish to bring back the classic Ercol look.

Finishing touches

Once the structure was secure, we focused on the final look. First, we carefully sanded every surface to remove the last traces of wear. Then, we smoothed out the wood and prepared it for finishing.

Next, we applied a light finish that restored the classic pale tone so loved in Ercol furniture. After that, we sealed the wood with a protective coat to ensure it will stay beautiful for years to come.

This mid-century table now shines with a fresh, bright look while keeping its original charm. It is available for £350, ready to take pride of place in its next home.
