A big, heavy oak Victorian school cabinet that was bleached, broken and dry after having been dipped in a hot caustic soda solution at some time in the past to remove its original paint finish.
The surface had deep cracks or ‘checking’ in the grain which will need to be filled with grain filler. The oaks natural colour had almost been bleached away.

The first order of business is to remove the doors, interior and metal work before repairs, filling and refinishing
After sanding, filling and recolouring, several coats of satin lacquer are applied before the interior is refitted.
Doors are repaired, filled, sanded and sprayed with several coats of lacquer
New handles with threaded spigots are turned from oak to replace the ones that would have existed originally. The original holes in the door for handles are plugged and new internal threads are cut.
All fittings and metal work are cleaned, repaired and repaired along with the doors
After filling and surface repairs, the exterior is recoloured and sealed with four coats of satin lacquer.
