Restored Pine Dining Table and Beech Chairs

A Rescue Mission for English Timber

This large pine table and set of beech kitchen chairs arrived at our workshop in a critical state. Having survived a collapsed ceiling and significant water damage, the set suffered from severe warping, cupping, and deep staining. While the wood looked battered, the underlying quality of the timber deserved a second chance. We saw the potential to transform these weathered pieces back into a functional, beautiful centerpiece for a modern home.

Precision Restoration and Structural Repair

Firstly, we focused on stabilizing the timber. We removed the old finish and thoroughly washed the wood with acetone to extract deep-seated wax deposits. Because the tabletop suffered from significant bowing, we performed extensive planing and sanding to level the surface.

To ensure the table remains sturdy for years to come, we implemented several structural upgrades:

  • Frame Reinforcement: We crafted new timber wedges to tighten the original joinery.
  • Hidden Strength: We then installed a discreet pair of coach bolts to secure the frame.
  • Surface Preparation: After removing damaged timber, we carefully recoloured the pine to restore its warm, natural depth.

Once all surfaces are prepared, three coats of Fiddes hardwax are applied to all surfaces to get a smooth, consistent natural sheen. The top required planing, sanding and colouring to counter the pale tone left after a considerable amount has been removed to correct the cupping and bowing. Some new wedges are made to strengthen the frame along with a hidden pair of coach screws/bolts.

A Lustrous and Durable Transformation

The final result celebrates the resilient beauty of natural wood. We applied three coats of Fiddes Hardwax oil to every surface, creating a smooth, consistent sheen that is both water-resistant and hard-wearing. Consequently, the table now boasts a rich, golden tone that masks its traumatic history. This restored pine and beech set combines rustic charm with professional durability, making it ready for a lifetime of family meals.
