From tree to table – a truly personal project
These bespoke side tables were created from a very special material: yew slabs cut from our client’s own tree. What was once part of their garden has been thoughtfully transformed into something to be enjoyed every day, carrying both natural beauty and personal meaning. After the tree was felled and carefully milled, two slices were selected and brought to us with the vision of creating unique, functional pieces that would honour the character of the timber.
Working with wood of this nature is always a balance between craftsmanship and respect for the material. Each slab tells its own story through its grain, colour, and natural edges, and our role is to enhance those features rather than overpower them. These tables are a celebration of that approach, turning a piece of the client’s history into something lasting and meaningful within their home.
Where skilled craftsmanship meets the raw beauty of yew
Each slab was individually flattened using a router sled jig to achieve a perfectly level surface while preserving the natural live edge. Due to their size and irregular shape, they could not be processed using a standard planer thicknesser, so a custom jig was made specifically for this project. This approach allowed us to level the surfaces with precision while keeping the organic form intact. The result lets the flowing grain and natural contours of the yew take centre stage, revealing rich tonal variation, intricate growth rings, and unique features that simply cannot be replicated.

Design‑led craftsmanship in solid beech
The bases were handcrafted in solid beech, chosen for its strength and clean, understated appearance. The legs are joined to shaped rails beneath the top, creating a solid and well-structured framework. Mid-height stretchers provide additional rigidity and stability, while also contributing to the overall balance of the design. The result is a considered construction where craftsmanship supports, rather than competes with, the beauty of the wood.

Built to last, made to be enjoyed
These live-edge yew side tables are a perfect example of bespoke furniture making, where every element is tailored to the material and the client’s story. Whether used as occasional tables, bedside tables, or statement pieces, they bring warmth, individuality, and a real connection to nature into the home.

At Artabelle Furniture, we specialise in creating one-off pieces from meaningful materials, whether that’s timber from a tree in your garden, reclaimed wood with history, or a piece you simply can’t bear to part with. We understand that these projects are about more than just furniture — they carry memories, stories, and a real connection to place.

We work closely with you from the outset, helping to shape an idea into a practical, well-crafted design that suits both the material and your space. From assessing and preparing the timber, to advising on proportions, finishes, and construction, every step is carefully considered. The result is a piece that not only functions beautifully but also feels deeply personal, made to be lived with and appreciated for years to come.
