Hans Wegner valet chair designed for Johannes Hansen

The Hans Wegner valet chair is an iconic example of mid‑century Danish design, blending sculptural beauty with everyday practicality. Created in 1953, the chair is both a functional object and a thoughtful response to the simple question of where to place one’s clothes at the end of the day. Its gently curved top rail serves as a natural rest for a jacket, while the teak seat lifts to reveal a cleverly designed storage compartment—ideal for small personal items. The oak frame and teak elements carry the timeless elegance and craftsmanship Wegner is celebrated for.

Wegner developed the concept after a conversation about the awkwardness of folding clothes before bed, ultimately creating a chair that acts as a personal valet. The combination of warm timber tones, graceful lines and original brass hardware makes this piece a standout example of functional furniture elevated into art.

Our restoration

When this chair arrived in our workshop, it showed the marks of many years of use. The finish had dulled and the wood needed careful attention to bring back its natural depth and character. We refinished the chair with respect for its materials and craftsmanship, restoring the clarity of the oak grain and the rich tones of the teak seat while preserving its patina and original details.
