Florence Knoll credenza (for IBM, USA)

Florence Knoll credenza (for IBM, USA)

When the Florence Knoll company was approached in the 1970s to reimagine the office desk/workstation for the IBM company, their solution, executed in typical Florence Knoll elegance, was the low credenza. The iconic design works as well in the dining room as it does in the office with lots of drawers, boxes, and internal storage. The credenza was designed around the first generation of office computers, and with subsequent office computers becoming smaller, the credenza design as an office unit started to become oversized and redundant.

This particular credenza was from New York and made its way by shipping container before suffering decades in storage in which it took a severe beating as well as water damage. The varnish was worn and scratched, parts of the teak veneer was missing, the two middle legs were missing, and the original leather handles were either missing or in such a bad state that they needed replacing.

After cleaning the carcass inside and out with glasspaper, we fixed/replaced the damaged teak veneer, recolouring it to match the existing one.

The customer managed to source some spare legs from the USA to replace the missing ones, and we prepared the sideboard for spraying.

We asked our upholstery colleagues at Willowtree Upholstery to create new leather handles.

The inside, made of oak veneer with solid oak drawers, has been cleaned and sprayed.

Back to its stunning self, this credenza is now ready to be delivered to its new home.
