Vintage Fischel bentwood armchair, c.1910 – £230

This exquisite Fischel bentwood armchair is a rare find dating from around 1910. It was crafted by the renowned Austrian company Fischel, a contemporary of Thonet. At the time, both makers led the way in using steam-bending techniques to create graceful, strong, and affordable seating. As a result, this armchair not only reflects outstanding craftsmanship but also represents a turning point in European furniture design that later shaped the modernist movement.

Condition and restoration

When this chair arrived in our workshop, we carried out a full inspection. First, we confirmed that the structure was completely sound. There were no splits, delamination, or fractures to the frame. Next, we checked the original fastenings, which remain secure more than a century later. In addition, a remnant of the original Fischel paper label survives beneath the seat, providing a valuable link to its history and provenance.

During restoration, we worked with care to preserve the rich patina and surface character that only develops over time. Therefore, the chair retains its authentic feel while being ready for many more decades of use.

Design appeal

Bentwood chairs like this are admired worldwide for their strength and elegance. The steam-bent beech frame gives the armchair its graceful curves and lightweight form. Moreover, the warm wood tones and flowing lines make it versatile, blending seamlessly with both period homes and modern interiors.

Not only is it beautiful, but it is also practical. The seat offers comfort for everyday use while maintaining the clean, simple design that made bentwood furniture iconic. For example, it can serve as a statement piece in a hallway, a stylish desk chair, or a timeless addition to a dining space.

Conclusion

This Fischel armchair is ideal for anyone who values quality craftsmanship and timeless design. In short, it is more than just a seat. It is a piece of design history that brings sophistication, charm, and character to any setting.

Offered at £230, it is ready to take pride of place in your home.
